General or Light Cleaning
To clean Sunbrella while still on a boat, follow these simple steps:
- Brush off loose dirt.
- Hose down.
- Prepare a cleaning solution of water and mild soap such as Woolite or Dawn dishwashing liquid.
- Use a soft bristle brush to clean.
- Allow cleaning solution to soak into the fabric.
- Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
- Air dry.
- May not require re-treatment depending on the age of the fabric.
If stubborn stains persist, you can use a diluted bleach/soap mixture for spot cleaning of mildew, roof run-off, or other similar stains (see the Stain Chart for specific recommendations).
Heavy Cleaning for Stubborn Stains and Mildew
Sunbrella fabrics do not promote mildew growth; however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances that are not removed from the fabric. To clean stubborn stains:
- Prepare a solution of 1 cup bleach and 1/4 cup of mild soap per gallon of clean water.
- Soak the affected area in the solution for 15 minutes.
- Remove the stain with a sponge or clean towel.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
- Air dry.
Remember to protect the area around your Sunbrella fabric if using a bleach solution. Carpet or other fabrics that are not Sunbrella may have an adverse reaction to the bleach.
Machine Washing (if suitable)
- Use mild soap.
- For heavier stains, add 1 cup of bleach to wash.
- Wash and rinse in cold water.
- Air dry. Never apply heat to Sunbrella.
- Re-treatment for water and stain resistance will be necessary after machine washing.
Re-treating the Fabric
Sunbrella fabrics are treated with a fluorocarbon finish, enhancing water repellency. This finish is designed to last for several years but must be replenished after thorough cleaning. Glen Raven® recommends 303® Fabric Guard™ as the preferred re-treatment product for Sunbrella fabrics. Fabrics should be re-treated after thorough cleaning or after five years of use.
Applying 303 Fabric Guard
- Clean Sunbrella fabric, using one of the cleaning methods.
- Allow Sunbrella to completely air dry.
- Apply 303 Fabric Guard in a well-ventilated area following instructions on the container.
- Apply 303 in a thin, even coat and allow fabric to dry completely.
- Apply a second thin, even coating of 303. (Two light coatings are more effective in restoring fabric water resistance than a single heavy coating.)
- Note: A 15-ounce bottle provides coverage of up to 50 square feet of fabric.
Professional Cleaners
You may have access to professional cleaning firms. In evaluating the services of a professional firm, inquire about a firm’s experience in working with Sunbrella fabrics and knowledge of cleaning and re-treatment requirements. DO NOT dry clean Sunbrella fabrics.
Helpful Hints
- Protect the area around the Sunbrella fabric when using a bleach solution – bleach may discolor non-Sunbrella fabrics. Always rinse Sunbrella thoroughly to completely remove bleach.
- Be aware of the environment when cleaning with bleach. Bleach can have harmful effects on the natural environment around you.
- Sunbrella air dries very quickly. Machine drying is not necessary.
- If fabric has some wrinkling, use an iron, if necessary, but only on the synthetic setting. Test a small inconspicuous area before ironing the entire piece.
- DO NOT use a steamer or iron set to steam setting.
- Use of bleach and/or advanced age of the fabric application may impact the deterioration of the sewing thread and other non-Sunbrella components.
Marine Tops and Covers Care and Cleaning
One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella® fabrics looking good is to hose fabrics off on a monthly basis with clear water. This helps prevent dirt from becoming deeply embedded in the fabric and eliminates the need for more frequent vigorous cleaning. In most environments, a thorough cleaning will be needed every two to three years.
MARINE INTERIORS
CARE AND CLEANING
One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella® brand fabrics looking good is to properly maintain the fabrics. This can be accomplished by simply brushing off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabrics, wiping up spills as soon as they occur, or spot cleaning soon after stains occur.

- Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
- Allow fabric to air dry.
SPOT CLEANING
- Apply a light mist of mild soap and water using a spray bottle.
- Work the solution into the stain by lightly scrubbing the area with a sponge or very soft bristle brush.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
- Blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel or sponge.
- Wet-vacuum or blot excess water.

- Prepare a solution of 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of water.
- Spray on the entire area and allow to soak into the fabric for 15 minutes.
- Remove stain with a sponge, clean towel, or very soft bristle brush.

RE-TREATING THE FABRIC FOR EASE OF CLEANING
As part of the finishing process, Sunbrella fabrics are treated with a fluorocarbon finish, which enhances water repellency. This finish is designed to last for several years but must be replenished after a thorough cleaning. Based on test results, Glen Raven® recommends 303® Fabric Guard™ as the preferred re-treatment product for Sunbrella fabrics.
In evaluating the services of a professional firm, you should inquire about the firm’s experience in working with Sunbrella fabrics and knowledge of cleaning and re-treatment requirements.
DO NOT dry clean Sunbrella fabrics.
HELPFUL HINTS
- Protect the area around your Sunbrella fabric when using a bleach solution – bleach may discolor non-Sunbrella fabrics. Always rinse Sunbrella thoroughly to completely remove bleach.
- Please be aware of the environment when cleaning with bleach. Bleach can have harmful effects on the natural environment around you. We do not advise using bleach if you are surrounded by a body of water or other environment that could be affected.
- Sunbrella air-dries very quickly. Machine drying is not necessary.
- If fabric has some wrinkling, use an iron, if necessary, but only on the synthetic setting. As some irons exceed the recommended temperature on the synthetic setting, test a small inconspicuous area before ironing the entire piece.
- DO NOT use a steamer or iron set to steam setting.
Clear Care Instructions
To maximize the lifespan of clear PVC plastic windows, it is important to clean them regularly. Following the proper care instructions will help maintain the appearance and functionality of the windows.
Cleaning Process
- Hose Off Dirt: Start by hosing off dirt and loose particles from the surface of the windows.
- Use Mild Soap and Water: Prepare a mild soap and water solution. Use a soft cloth to wash the surface of the windows.
- Avoid Harsh Brushes or Abrasives: Do not use harsh brushes, abrasives, or any materials that may scratch or damage the surface.
- Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the windows thoroughly to remove all soap residues.
- Dry with a Clean Chamois: Use a clean chamois to dry the windows, ensuring no water spots or streaks are left behind.
Additional Considerations
- Sunlight and Environmental Pollution: Exposure to sunlight and environmental pollution can cause permanent discoloration and brittleness in the windows. Regular washing helps prevent this damage.
- Dirt, Pollutants, and Salt: Regularly wash off dirt, pollutants, and salt to maintain the appearance and integrity of the windows.
- Use Mild Detergent: Select a mild detergent for cleaning. Avoid products containing silicones or alcohol, as they may harm the material.

Important Information
- Fabricators and vessel & car owners must read and understand this information.
- Fabricators should provide owners a copy of this sheet.
- Recommended to use only IMAR Products: IMAR Strataglass Protective Polish, IMAR Strataglass Protective Cleaner, and mild soap (preferably IMAR Yacht Soap Concentrate) on Strataglass.
- Harsh cleaners like “Simple Green and Orpine” will dull the curtains quickly.
- NEVER use a wash-and-wax product on Strataglass.
- WARNING: Use of Rain-X, Pledge, or Plexus appears to work for a short time but then dulls the surface and presents an “Orange Peel” effect. Do not use these products.
- Cleaners, polishes, scratch removers, or any other products made for regular, uncoated vinyl will damage STRATAGLASS. Do not use these products.
- DO NOT HANDLE STRATAGLASS (OR ANY VINYL) WITH SUNSCREEN ON YOUR HANDS! This will permanently cloud the vinyl where handled.
General Maintenance
- When New: 3M Adhesive Remover may be used to remove glue left from fabrication. Final clean with IMAR Strataglass Protective Cleaner. Use IMAR Strataglass Protective Polish as the final step in installation for protection and good watershed.
- For the Customer: Use IMAR Strataglass Protective Polish every 1 to 2 months. In the interim, use IMAR Strataglass Protective Cleaner frequently.
- Note: New vinyl can easily get impressions. Leave new enclosures in place as much as possible. If removed, interleaved with acid-free paper or old sheets to prevent “pooling” in the glass. Vinyl “seasons” over time and becomes less impressionable. Roll all curtains down and fasten in place nightly to keep perfect appearance.
Cleaning
- Flush thoroughly to cool the surface and rinse away environmental abrasives.
- Wash with IMAR Yacht Soap Concentrate or other gentle, high-quality soap. No harsh cleaners or detergents.
- Apply soapy water to the clear vinyl section with a special washing mitt or soft cotton cloths.
- Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and dry with a high-quality chamois.
- Wash curtains whenever the boat is washed.
- Apply IMAR Strataglass Protective Polish sparingly with small, light circular motions using a soft cotton cloth. Allow to dry, then remove and lightly buff to a shine.
- For routine maintenance, use IMAR Strataglass Protective Cleaner. Lightly mist a soft cotton cloth, rub, and buff dry with another clean cloth.
- Use IMAR Strataglass Cleaner at least weekly.
Restoring
- If IMAR Strataglass Protective Polish cannot restore clarity and shine, consider replacing the enclosures.

Velvet Care
The luxuriance, richness, and charm of velvet drapes are time-honored. Few are aware of the complexities involved in its manufacture and the hazards prevailing in transportation due to its delicate nature.
Production
- Extreme technical exactness is demanded in the production of velvet.
- Velvet is produced by weaving two sides as one simultaneously, and then cutting them with a knife.
- Minor variations in knife control can crop small tufts of pile, known as ‘pinholes’, an inherent characteristic of velvet.
- Blackout lining is recommended to protect against fading and eliminate the visibility of pinholes.
- Velvet curtains should be sewn with the pile running up to reduce light reflection and pressure marks.
Transit
- Crushing in transit can occur, causing pile distortion and bands of light and dark.
- The weight of hanging, atmospheric changes, or steam ironing the velvet on the backing side can correct pile distortion.
- Velvet curtains must be given time to settle in.
Upholstery and Drapery Use
- For upholstery, use Dacron or Calico over all furniture cushions to prevent pulling and damage.
- For drapery, ensure to manufacture all drapes with pile ‘running up’ for a richer depth of color.
Stain Removal Guide
Spot cleaning advice is offered in good faith but is not a guarantee. For severe stains, consult a professional cleaning company.
General Guidelines
- Treat spills and stains as soon as possible.
- Test on a hidden area to ensure fabric and color are not removed.
- Gently scrape any soil or mop any liquid from the surface.
- Be cautious with soap or detergent with water to avoid over wetting and water marking.
Non Oil-Based Stains
- Use warm water and non-toilet soaps without optical brighteners.
- Apply soap and warm water solution to the stain, rubbing gently.
- Blot dry with a clean towel, apply cool water, and blot dry again.
- Dry quickly with a hair dryer to prevent rings forming.
- Clean whole panels of fabric rather than spot cleaning specific areas.
Oil-Based Stains
- Apply a proprietary brand solvent-based cleaner.
- Clean generally in panels rather than spot cleaning specific areas.
- For spot removal of oil-based biro marks, use conventional hair spray.

Clear PVC plastic windows must be cleaned regularly to maximise their potential life expectancy.
Always start by hosing the dirt and loose particles from the surface. Using a mild soap and water solution, wash the surface with a soft cloth. Never use a harsh brush or abrasives when cleaning plastic windows. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and dry with a clean chamois.
The effects of sunlight combined with environmental pollution will alter the chemical structure of your plastic window, resulting in permanent discolouration and brittleness.
To maintain the clarity and extend the life of your plastic windows, it is recommended that you regularly wash dirt, airborne pollutants and salt off the surfaces.
Do not use harsh detergents when washing your clear PVC plastic windows. A mild detergent in water applied with a soft cloth is satisfactory.
Do not use products containing silicones or alcohol on your plastic windows such as typical commercial vinyl care products and glass cleaners.
Do not rub plastic windows when dry. This will scratch the surface. Always soak the window with water and then gently clean it with a damp, soft cloth.
